Buy resources to support New Brighton's youth

Youth Alive Trust

We run after school and evening clubs and programmes for children and young people every week from the ages of 5 - 18. In 2018 we will have 8 different weekly clubs, with 8 different coordinators, over 45 volunteers, and a variety of programmes targeting different tastes. The Safer Streets Clubs, are about taking young people off the streets, and giving them regular, fun, positive experiences, with encouraging and relational youthworkers. We charge only minimal costs to attend the clubs in order to decrease the barriers of those wanting to attend, but look to funders to help subsidise the actual costs of these activities and the cost of employing staff to coordinate them all. We are hoping Z Energy will support some of these costs including arts and crafts resources, food, sports equipment and new games.

Empower youth through quality experiences

Blue Light Ventures - Christchurch

Blue Light helps Christchurch people through the range of supervised programmes and events run that target; Youth at risk, life-skills, crime reduction and cultural, social, sporting and educational activities free of alcohol, drugs and violence. Through these initiatives we are helping to empower our youth to reach their full potential and to become contributing members of society rather than a social cost to it. This enhances community safety and helps to build positive relationships between the police, young people, their whanau and the community.

Reduce food waste and feed the hungry

New Brighton Community Fridge and Pantry

The Community Fridge is located in New Brighton and provides food to between 80 - 100 families per day. We rescue excess food from supermarkets, cafes etc and bring it to the Fridge and Pantry where those in need in the community can then come and take what they need with no questions asked. The community also contributes from their gardens and pantry's. It is open 7 days a week from 7am to 7pm. Volunteers pick up the food from various places and others help monitor and clean the fridge daily. It has proved very successful with new faces appearing daily. The homeless have also found it helpful not just for food but companionship. The Police are finding its helping to reduce crime in the area, and the mental health department are finding their clients are doing better just because they are eating better. The community has been incredibly supportive and encouraging. This project does two things: while it helps to reduce waste that would otherwise go to the landfill, it is now going to people who are in need and they are so grateful for this opportunity.
